GodRecently in my Sunday School class our teacher Kyle posed the question, “Do you thirst for God?”  My answer was of course yes but it got me thinking, is there a difference between thirsting for God and hungering for God.  I believe there is.

What is thirsting?  In the flesh it is when you have become dehydrated and your body needs liquids to rehydrate itself.  Just like your body, your spirit can become dehydrated by the day to day happenings is the world.  You become dry in the Spirit.  It’s then that you need a filling of the Holy Ghost to rehydrate you.

Hunger on the other hand is different.  It’s an empty feeling.  A hole in your gut that must be filled with food.  Liquids won’t do.  It must be something solid.  Something of worth.  Something that can be broken down and all the nutrients extracted from it.

When you hunger for God it is like an empty pit in your soul that must be filled.  Being filled with the Holy Ghost can only subdue the hunger for so long.  The only way to feed that pit is with God.  Praying and talking with Him.  Riding the Word, or meat, that He has provided.  Just like the manna and quail provided to the Israelites in the wilderness, God has provided his Word, the Bible, to feed our souls.

Now the question must be asked, which is more important, hungering or thirsting?  They are both important.  You can’t be a day-in-day-out Christian without being fed by God’s word.  Equally you can’t live your Christian life to its fullest without the hydration of the Holy Ghost.

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”  Matthew 5:6

We must hunger for our Father God to fill our souls with His love and His Word wrapping us up in His presence.  And the Holy Ghost hydrating our thirsty spirits with wells of living water.
